Gung Fu training

Postby Paul mcgovern on Tue Nov 20, 2007 4:22 am

After years of training in Karate but feeling that something was missing I made the switch to Walts Academy.
I found the Gung fu approach to be more appropriate for my body as I got into my forties as the ballistic way of training in the japanese arts was too hard on the joints etc....
I also appreciate the less formal approach as there is a more recognition of the fact that we are thinking, mature individuals that do not need to be bellowed at as though we were children.
I look forward to getting back with my mates at Parramatta once my torn rotater cuff heals.
cheers,

Paul,

Sounds a lot like my own experiences. Gongfu certainly works for me. What attracted you to Walt's school?

When Goshin Ryu became a points karate club in the mid eighties there was very little of what might be called realistic training to be found and there were other personal issues that I wont go into here.
At the time my training partners and I were looking around for something else to do and going to train with Walt was discussed but not long after that I became frustrated and fed up with the experiences I was having with Karate politics so I bailed out for a few years.
I always enjoyed Walts articles in AFA magazine and when I started a new job at baulkham Hills I took the opportuntity to train with him and have been there ever since.
As Walt will tell you, I am hardly the most regular trainer but when I do front up I never give less than 100%.
The techniques attracted me but the friendships and no bull attitude keeps me there.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for a little of your background and views. Is there anything about the Chinese approach that drew you in?

Paul,

I too started out in Karate and TKD. I found I could do the techniques, but I wasn't confortable with the training methods or the forms. I started my Kung Fu training in 1975, and I have stopped, other that to dual train in Keisatsu jujitsu, and our current Grandmaster has pasted on. So, I have found myself reverting to what I know best, Kung fu Tranining.

I too had the Karate and TKD experience as well. I could do many of the things that was expected of me. However, when it came to forms I was never comfortable doing TKD or Kata Forms. They never fit my personality to the system. When I met my Sifu in 1975 (Not Telling my age) he was young and energetic and very good. He was my inspriation to excell in his Gung Fu System. Now I am the 2nd most senior Instructor in the system. I feel as though I have excelled and went on. Especially with meeting all the Martist Artists in the world.

It seems that many of us have had a similar experience in our move towards Gongfu.

You are right. Martial Arts is like a glove. Each one is different and you have to find the right one that fits you. I think that is how we all ended up in the arts we study
